The Movie and The Play: Similarities and Differences

Comparison

First of all, the setting of the movie was much different than that of the play. The play was set in modern times. By doing this it changed many things like the weapons they used, their method of transportation, their homes, clothes, and technology. Instead of using swords, they had pistols. Instead of walking, they had cars to go around. And instead of their homes being against each other, it was two large businesses fighting. The movie also took place in a large city, and the play took place in a small town.

The overall plot was the same, except that when Juliet awakens, they are in the church, not the tomb, and Romeo never kills Paris in the movie. When Tybalt is fighting Mercutio, Tybalt stabs him with a shard of glass, unlike the movie when he stabs him with a sword.
